How Do I Find a Good Contractor?

While hiring contractors recommended by friends is usually a safe route, never hire a construction professional without first checking him or her out. Also, call your local Better Business Bureau to see if there are any complaints on file. Ask for references and check them out or ask me for a list of suppliers and subcontractors that our office recommends at RE/MAX The Woodlands & Spring based on work and relationships already established!!!

If you are satisfied with the answers you find there, interview the contractor candidates. Ask what kind of worker's compensation insurance they carry and get policy and insurance company phone numbers so you can verify the information. If they are not covered, you could be liable for any work-related injury incurred during the project. Also be sure that the contractor has an umbrella general liability policy.

If they pass the insurance hurdle, next check some of their references. A good contractor will be happy to provide as many as you want.

Finally, don't let yourself be rushed into making a decision no matter how competitive the market may seem. Also, never pay a deposit to a contractor at the first meeting. You may end up losing your money.

The Woodlands Township's 2010 Budget Features Law Enforcement Changes

The Woodlands Township's 2010 Budget Features Law Enforcement ChangesThe Woodlands Township Board of Directors approved a $78 million operating budget for 2010 at its meeting on Wednesday, August 26, 2009.

One of the major program changes in the approved 2010 budget is an enhancement to the community policing program which is provided through a contract with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO). The enhanced community policing program will increase contract expenditures from a current level of approximately $5 million per year to $7.5 million in 2010.

The enhanced community policing program includes the following:

  • The Woodlands will become a single district and will include the entire Township.
  • The community policing zones will be increased from five to seven.
  • Twenty-two new personnel will be hired for the new district.
  • Total personnel contracted and assigned to the new district will be 82 versus 55 under contract today.
  • Implementation will begin in January 2010 as soon as budget funding becomes available. Full implementation will take place in 2010.

In addition, the Township budget provides funding to the Montgomery County Constable, as well as funding for The Woodlands Fire Department and additional security through The Woodlands Township Ambassador program, Park Rangers, Alpha and Omega Mounted Patrol, and crime prevention education through The Woodlands Watch program. The Township continues to work with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and other crime prevention agencies, working together to solve crimes in our area.
